Most follow gates ask, wait, and send the link either way. Tadlo asks Meta’s API whether the follow really happened — and acts on the answer.
tadlo.ai puts your Instagram growth on autopilot — DMs, comments, bio links and analytics all in one free tool.
Reads Meta’s is_user_follow_business field instead of trusting a tap.
They comment your keyword, follow, and the link arrives automatically.
Anyone who already follows you is never asked — they get the link straight away.
Deliver regardless after a prompt, or require the follow before releasing.
Included on the free plan, not reserved for a paid tier.
If the check cannot resolve, the person is believed rather than blocked.
Choose the keyword or story reply that starts the flow.
Choose a soft ask or a hard gate, and write the message.
The follow is checked against Meta’s API before the link is released.
An Instagram follow gate is an automation that asks someone to follow your account before it delivers the link, code or download they asked for. They comment your keyword, a DM arrives, and the content is released once the follow happens.
It is the highest-leverage automation on Instagram because it converts intent you already have. Someone who comments to ask for your lead magnet has raised their hand. A follow gate turns that one moment into a follower and a lead instead of just a lead.
Tadlo reads the is_user_follow_business field from Meta’s Instagram User Profile API on graph.instagram.com. The field became available to us when Meta’s App Review granted the instagram_business_manage_messages permission — one of five permissions Tadlo holds — and it returns a real per-person answer rather than an estimate.
The check runs twice, because the two moments are different. At comment time Tadlo checks first: if you already follow, the gate is skipped entirely and the link arrives immediately — no one is asked to follow an account they already follow. After someone taps “I’m following”, Tadlo checks again, and that second check is the one that decides whether a hard gate releases the link.
Whether the Instagram API can answer this question at all is the thing most tools get wrong about it. We wrote up which API can verify a follow and which cannot, with the production numbers behind it.
There are three answers, not two. FOLLOWS, DOES_NOT_FOLLOW, and UNKNOWN — where UNKNOWN means a throttle, a network failure, or a token problem on our side.
UNKNOWN always fails open. An unresolved check is never rendered as “you are not following”. A missing answer is our problem, not a fact about the person — and telling a real follower they have not followed is the worst outcome this feature can produce. It accuses them of lying, and we would only ever hear about it as a support ticket. So when Tadlo cannot tell, the person is believed.
Between 14 August and 5 September 2026, Tadlo ran 12,344 follow checks across 91 Instagram accounts and 7,513 people. That measurement is what this page is built on.
41%
of checks returned DOES_NOT_FOLLOW — 5,059 people who had not followed
33.3%
of people who tapped “I’m following” had not followed (1,365 of 4,099)
2,669
people observed in both states — the check tracks real follow events
One in three people who claim to have followed have not. That is the number that matters. On an honor-system gate every one of them receives the link anyway, so a third of the audience takes the thing you were charging a follow for and gives nothing back.
The 2,669 figure is the one that makes the rest trustworthy. Those are people seen as DOES_NOT_FOLLOW and later as FOLLOWS — the field captured them actually following. A check that returned a constant could not do that.
Fewer than one check in four hundred came back UNKNOWN, and each of those was resolved in the person’s favour. For more on where the gate fits in a wider automation system, see Automation 3: Follow Gate in our complete guide, and Strategy 3: Follow Gate Sequences.
The rest of the category describes the follow gate as an honor system, and says so openly. CreatorFlow’s documentation states: “Instagram’s API does not allow apps to verify follow status in real time. Follow Gate works on the honor system.” Their guidance adds that when someone taps “I’m following”, “the button is a self-report”, and concludes: “This is not a CreatorFlow limitation. It is a Meta platform limitation that applies to every tool in the category.” (creatorflow.so/learn/follow-gate, May 2026)
They are describing a different API, and about that API they are correct. The Instagram Graph API reached through a linked Facebook Page — graph.facebook.com — exposes no endpoint answering “does user X follow account Y”. Meta removed that years ago.
The capability exists on the newer Instagram Login stack, graph.instagram.com, and only once you hold the messaging permission and have an IGSID from a messaging context. That is a different surface with different permissions, which is why a conclusion drawn before those permissions existed can be accurate when written and out of date now.
We are not the only ones who have noticed. Socioverse published an accurate description of the same mechanism, naming the field and correctly observing that the reliable check happens after the first message rather than at comment time (socioverse.io, August 2026). They deserve the credit for documenting it publicly.
Meta’s Spam Community Standard restricts requiring engagement in exchange for promised content. A follow gate sits close to that line, and pretending otherwise would not serve you. Every honest treatment of this feature in the category, including CreatorFlow’s, acknowledges it as a grey area.
The practical read: gate things you are giving away, not things people are trying to buy. A free guide, a discount code, a giveaway entry, a waitlist — these are fair exchanges, and the person asking has not paid you anything yet.
Use it where the follow is the price of something genuinely free, and turn it off where the click was already worth more than the follower.
The follow gate is included on Tadlo’s free plan, not reserved for a paid tier. Unlimited automations and unlimited DMs are included with it, with no card and no trial clock. See pricing for what each plan includes.
Every message is sent through Meta’s official Messaging API, and Tadlo is approved through Meta App Review. For how that approval works and what permissions it grants, see comment-to-DM automation, and for the difference between official-API tools and bot-based ones, our complete guide to Instagram automation covers it in full.

Tadlo verifies it. The follow status is read from the is_user_follow_business field on Meta’s Instagram User Profile API, which returns a real per-person answer. Across 12,344 checks in a 23-day window, 41% came back as not following — so the field discriminates rather than returning a constant, and a hard gate acts on the answer.
The person is believed and the content is delivered. An unresolved check means a throttle, a network failure or a token problem on our side, none of which is evidence about them. Telling a genuine follower they have not followed is the worse failure, so Tadlo fails open. Fewer than one check in four hundred lands here.
Yes, on the free plan, with unlimited automations and unlimited DMs alongside it and no credit card. Most tools in the category reserve follow gating for a paid tier. The only paid variation is the hard gate, which can end a flow when someone never follows; the soft ask is free.
Tadlo sends every message through Meta’s official Messaging API and is approved through Meta App Review, which is what separates it from tools that imitate a person in the app. The judgement call is editorial rather than technical: gate free content, and never gate a purchase, a support reply or something already paid for.
They are never asked. Tadlo checks before sending the gate, and anyone who already follows skips it and receives the link immediately. This matters more than it sounds — asking a loyal follower to follow you is the single most irritating thing an honor-system gate does, and it happens on every request.
A soft ask prompts for the follow and delivers the content regardless, so nobody is turned away. A hard gate withholds the link until the follow is verified, re-checking on each tap. Soft is right for lead magnets where reach matters most; hard is right for giveaways and exclusive drops where the follow is the point.
No. Tadlo connects through Instagram Login directly, so an Instagram Business or Creator account is all you need. That also happens to be why the verified check is possible — it runs on the Instagram Login stack rather than the older Graph API reached through a linked Facebook Page.
Yes. Every check is recorded against the flow, so you can see how many people were asked, how many followed, and how many claimed to have followed without doing so. That last number is usually the surprise, and it is the clearest measure of what an honor-system gate would have cost you.
