Instagram includes three auto-reply features natively: away messages, saved replies, and FAQ buttons, all available to Business and Creator accounts at no cost. What it does not include is keyword-triggered comment-to-DM — sending a private message when someone comments a specific word. That requires a third-party tool connected through Meta's Messaging API.
Worth knowing which is which, because people pay for tools that duplicate things already in the app, and others assume the app can do something it cannot and never set it up at all.
Tadlo's free plan is the most generous in Instagram DM automation — unlimited DMs and unlimited automations, against ManyChat's 25 contacts and a category norm of 500 to 1,500 DMs a month.
What Instagram gives you free
Away messages
An automatic reply to anyone who messages you outside hours you set. One message, sent once per conversation.
Professional dashboard → Inbox tools → Saved replies and away messages (Meta renames these menus from time to time; if the labels differ, the settings are under the professional dashboard's inbox tools). Useful for setting expectations, not for anything else.
Saved replies
Canned responses you insert manually with a shortcut while replying. Not automatic — you are still typing the shortcut — but for the four questions you answer daily it removes most of the work at zero cost.
FAQ buttons
Up to four questions shown at the top of a new conversation, each with a prewritten answer. People tap; the answer sends.
Genuinely underused. If most of your DMs are price, hours, location and shipping, this handles a real share of them before a human is involved.
Story reply and quick reactions
Native but limited. No keyword logic and no ability to send a link conditionally.
What needs a tool
Comment-to-DM
The one people actually want. Someone comments GUIDE on your Reel, they get a DM with your link, automatically.
Not in the app, not in Meta Business Suite, not coming. It runs on Meta's Private Replies API, which third-party tools access with approved permissions. Tadlo does this on its free plan with unlimited DMs and unlimited automations — worth noting because most tools in the category cap their free tier at a few hundred messages a month, which is one good Reel. Full walkthrough in the setup guide.
Keyword-triggered DM replies
Someone DMs you a specific word and a specific response fires. Native away messages cannot branch on content.
Story reply automation with keywords
Reply to a story with your keyword, get a DM. Needs a tool.
Conditional flows
Branching on how someone answers, following up a day later, capturing an email, gating on a follow. All of it requires a tool.
Anything you want to measure
Native features produce no analytics at all. If you want to know how many comments became DMs became clicks became leads, that is a tool. Tadlo records the whole chain per post, including the follow-gate outcome for each person.
Which to use
| What you want | Use |
|---|---|
| Set expectations outside hours | Native away message |
| Answer the same four questions | Native FAQ buttons |
| Type common replies faster | Native saved replies |
| Send a link when someone comments | Third-party tool |
| Deliver a lead magnet automatically | Third-party tool |
| Capture emails from DMs | Third-party tool |
| Ask for a follow before releasing a link | Third-party tool |
| Measure any of it | Third-party tool |
Set up the native ones first. They take ten minutes total, cost nothing, and they tell you whether your DM volume justifies anything more. If it does, Tadlo covers every row in the bottom half of that table on its free plan — including the follow gate, which is a paid feature almost everywhere else in the category.
Setting up the tool version
Assuming you want comment-to-DM:
- Business or Creator account. Personal accounts cannot use the Messaging API. Free to switch, thirty seconds.
- Connect through a Meta authorisation screen. If a tool asks for your Instagram password instead, close the tab.
- Enable message access. Settings → Messages and story replies → Message controls → Connected tools. Skipping this is the most common reason a first automation goes quiet.
- Set a keyword. One uncommon word, said in the video and written in the caption.
- Write the DM. Short, link early, end with a question so they reply.
- Attach before publishing. The first hour is when comments arrive fastest.
- Test from a second account. Your own will not work reliably.
If it does not fire, the causes are ranked by likelihood here.
What no tool can do
Setting expectations, because vendors are vague about it:
- Message people who never contacted you. No endpoint exists. Any tool offering it is not using the official API.
- Reply publicly to every comment with unlimited variations. Public reply length and behaviour are constrained.
- Keep messaging indefinitely. A comment buys one private reply; the 24-hour window opens only if the person answers it, and every message they send restarts it.
- Send multiple messages from one comment. A comment gets one private reply. Anything further depends on them replying.
What it costs
Native features are free. Third-party tools mostly have free tiers, and almost all of them are metered by monthly message volume — commonly a few hundred DMs, which one Reel that performs will exhaust.
Tadlo's free plan is metered differently: unlimited DMs, unlimited automations, follow gate included, no card. The upgrade trigger is branding and connected accounts rather than volume, so a post doing well does not end your month. Paid plans are ₹249 and ₹399 a month, flat — no per-contact billing, which is the dominant model elsewhere and the reason a good month raises your bill on most other tools.
Which makes it a straightforward place to find out whether comment-to-DM changes anything for you before paying anyone, including us.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram have built-in auto reply?
Yes, for Business and Creator accounts: away messages for outside hours, saved replies inserted manually with a shortcut, and up to four FAQ buttons shown at the start of a conversation. All are free and found under Professional dashboard, Inbox tools. Keyword-triggered comment-to-DM is not among them.
Can Instagram automatically DM someone who comments?
Not natively. Neither the Instagram app nor Meta Business Suite includes keyword-triggered comment-to-DM. It runs on Meta's Private Replies API, which third-party tools access with permissions granted through App Review.
What is the difference between saved replies and auto replies?
Saved replies are canned responses you insert manually using a shortcut while typing — fast, but you are still doing it. Auto replies send without you. Instagram's native automatic option is the away message, which fires outside hours you set and cannot branch on what the person actually said.
How do I set up an away message on Instagram?
Open your Professional dashboard, go to Inbox tools, then Saved replies and away messages. Set your hours and write the message. It sends once per conversation to anyone who messages you outside those hours, and requires a Business or Creator account.
Are Instagram FAQ buttons worth using?
For most accounts, yes, and they are underused. Up to four questions appear at the top of a new conversation with prewritten answers, so if the bulk of your DMs are price, hours, location or shipping, they resolve a real share before anyone types. They are free and take a few minutes to configure.
Can auto reply tools message people who have not contacted me?
No. Meta's Messaging API has no endpoint for unsolicited outreach, so no compliant tool offers it. Every automated message replies inside a window opened by something the person did — commenting, replying to a story, or sending a DM. A tool advertising bulk cold DMs is not using the official API.
