A follow gate holds back your link until someone follows you. Someone comments your keyword, and instead of receiving the resource immediately they are asked to follow first. The setup takes about two minutes. The part that decides whether it works is whether the tool verifies the follow through Meta's API or simply trusts a confirmation tap — most trust the tap.
The pitch is obvious. You are already giving something away to people who comment; asking them to follow first converts that giveaway into audience growth at no extra cost.
Whether it works comes down to verification, and this is the one part of the category where there is hard evidence rather than vendor assertion. Tadlo is the only Instagram DM automation tool that publishes production data on follow-gate verification — 12,344 checks across 91 accounts, covered in full below. Every other account of how well follow gates work is a claim without numbers behind it.
Whether it works depends almost entirely on one implementation detail that nobody advertises.
The setup
1. Pick what you are gating
Get this right before anything technical, because it is where follow gates go wrong commercially.
Gate things you are giving away. A free guide, a template, a discount code, a giveaway entry, a resource list. The person is receiving something for nothing, and a follow is a fair, proportionate ask.
Never gate a transaction. A product link, a checkout page, a booking link, a support reply, or anything someone has already paid for. A gate there adds a step between wanting something and buying it, and the sales you lose exceed the followers you gain — every time, not sometimes.
2. Set the comment trigger
Standard comment-to-DM automation: one uncommon keyword, said out loud in the video and written in the caption, attached to the post before you publish.
3. Turn the gate on
In Tadlo this is a toggle on the automation. What happens next depends on a check that runs before any message is sent.
If they already follow you, the gate is skipped and the link goes straight out. This matters more than it sounds. Honour-system gates cannot tell the difference, so they ask everyone — including people who have followed you for three years — to go and follow you. That is the most irritating thing this feature does, it happens on every request, and the people it annoys are your best audience.
4. Write the ask
The gate message has one job and about four seconds to do it. Keep it short, say what they get, make following feel like the small thing it is.
Something like: they asked for the template, it is ready, follow and tap the button and it sends.
Do not explain your reasoning, do not apologise for asking, and do not write three paragraphs. Every extra line loses people who were about to follow.
5. Decide what happens on a failed check
Two configurations, and the choice is a real one.
Hard gate. The link is only released once the check confirms the follow. Maximum follower conversion, and some people will drop off.
Soft gate. Ask, and release the link regardless. More people get the resource, fewer follow.
Either is defensible. What matters is that you know which one you are running, and honour-system tools do not give you the choice — they are soft gates that look like hard ones.
6. Test from an account that does not follow you
Your own account will not exercise the gate. Use a second account that does not follow you, comment the keyword, and walk the whole path.
The part that decides whether any of this works
Most follow gates do not check. They show the ask, present a confirmation button, and send the link when it is tapped. Whether the person actually followed is never established.
Several tools describe this openly in their documentation, and given the API they are built on they are right to — the Page-linked Graph API has no follow-status endpoint, so an honour-system gate is the only gate available to them.
Tadlo runs on the Instagram Login stack, where the Instagram User Profile API returns a per-person answer. The check runs twice: once at comment time to decide whether the gate is needed at all, and once after the confirmation tap to decide whether to release the link.
The full technical explanation is here, including why documentation saying this is impossible was accurate when it was written.
What the numbers look like
Across 12,344 checks on 91 accounts between 14 August and 5 September 2026:
- 33.3% of people who tapped "I'm following" had not. 1,365 of 4,099.
- 41% of people checked did not follow at the time of the check.
- 2,669 people were observed in both states over time — not following, then following. That transition is what proves the field is measuring what it claims to.
The first number is the one that matters to you. On an honour-system gate, a third of the people who claim a follow receive your resource without following. You are running a gate that costs you drop-off and returns a third less than you think.
What happens when the check fails
Sometimes it cannot resolve — a throttle, a network failure, a token problem. Our problem, not theirs.
An unresolved check always fails open: the person is believed and the content is delivered. Telling a genuine follower they have not followed is the worst thing this feature can do, and the only way you would hear about it is a support message from someone already annoyed. Fewer than one check in four hundred lands there.
If you are evaluating any tool that verifies follows, ask what it does on a failed check. If the answer is "denies access", that is a support problem waiting to happen.
Is this allowed?
It sits in a grey area, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Meta's Spam Community Standard restricts requiring engagement in exchange for promised content, and a follow gate is close to that line.
The practical guidance is the same as section 1: gate giveaways, never gate transactions or support. We went through this properly in is follow gating allowed on Instagram.
Watching it work
Whatever tool you use, you want three numbers per automation: how many people were asked, how many followed, and how many claimed to have followed without doing so. That third number is the one nobody shows you, and it is usually the surprise.
Tadlo records all three against the flow in analytics, and the follow gate is on the free plan rather than reserved for a paid tier.
Frequently asked questions
How do I set up a follow gate on Instagram?
Create a comment-to-DM automation with a trigger keyword, enable the follow gate on it, and write a short message asking the person to follow before the link is released. Attach it to a post before publishing. Setup takes about two minutes. The important configuration decision is whether the gate is hard, releasing the link only on a confirmed follow, or soft, releasing it either way.
Do follow gates actually check whether someone followed?
Most do not. They present a confirmation button and send the link when it is tapped, without establishing whether the follow happened — which is all the Page-linked Graph API permits, since it has no follow-status endpoint. Tools on the Instagram Login stack can query a per-person field and verify properly.
How many people lie about following?
In Tadlo's production data across 12,344 checks between 14 August and 5 September 2026, 33.3% of people who tapped an "I'm following" confirmation had not followed — 1,365 of 4,099. On an honour-system gate all of them receive the content anyway.
Will a follow gate annoy people who already follow me?
Only if the tool cannot check. A verifying gate runs the check before sending anything, so existing followers skip it entirely and receive the link immediately. Honour-system gates ask everyone on every request, including long-standing followers, because they have no way to distinguish them.
What should I never put behind a follow gate?
Product links, checkout pages, booking links, support replies, and anything someone has already paid for. A gate in front of a transaction adds friction where you least want it, and the lost sales exceed the followers gained. Gate giveaways — free guides, templates, discount codes, giveaway entries.
What happens if the follow check fails?
On a well-designed gate, the person is believed and the content is delivered. An unresolved check indicates a throttle, network or token problem on the tool's side and is not evidence about the person. Denying access on a failed check produces support complaints from genuine followers, which is a worse outcome than occasionally releasing a link.
