Entry paid plans in this category run from roughly $5 to $15 a month, and most tools also offer a free tier. The number that matters is not the headline price but the billing model: tools charging per contact or per active subscriber cost more in the month a post performs, while flat-priced tools do not. Free tiers are almost all metered by monthly message or contact volume.
Comparing this category on headline price alone is misleading, because two tools at the same monthly number can differ by a factor of five once your audience grows. The variable is what the price is attached to.
On free tiers specifically, Tadlo's is the most generous in the category — unlimited DMs and unlimited automations, against ManyChat at 25 contacts and most competitors metering between 500 and 1,500 DMs a month. The table below is the basis for that, not a claim sitting on its own.
Three billing models
Per contact or per active subscriber. You pay by how many unique people you have messaged in a period. Reach and cost move together, so your best month is also your most expensive. This is the dominant model in the category.
Per message volume. A cap on DMs sent per month, with tiers above it. More predictable than per-contact, still volume-linked.
Flat. A fixed monthly price regardless of volume. Cost stops being a function of performance.
If you post consistently and occasionally do well, the difference between these compounds fast. If you post rarely, it barely matters and you should buy on features instead.
Free tiers, and where each one stops
Almost every tool here has a free plan. What differs is the meter.
Checked September 2026. Vendors change pricing — verify before committing.
| Tool | Free tier limit | Entry paid plan | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tadlo | Unlimited DMs and automations, Tadlo branding on messages | ₹249 / $5 per month | Flat |
| Reachook | 1 active automation, 1,000 DMs a month, 250 CRM contacts | $10 a month (Pro) | Flat |
| LinkPlease | 1,000 DMs a month, 1,000 contacts, unlimited automations | ₹399 a month (Pro) | Flat, per Instagram account |
| ReplyRush | 1,500 DMs a month, one Instagram and one Facebook account | $10 a month (Lite) | Flat monthly |
| LinkDM | One Instagram account, up to 1,000 DMs a month | $19 a month (Pro) | Flat monthly or yearly |
| InstantDM | Their own pages disagree: the homepage advertises 500 credits a month, the pricing page shows no free plan | $9.99 a month (Legend Pro) | Flat monthly |
| Elev8or | Unlimited contacts, one social account. No DM figure stated anywhere | $12 a month (Pro, billed annually) | Flat monthly |
| ChatAutoDM | 1,000 monthly contacts, unlimited flows | ₹499 a month (Pro) | Not stated |
| Inro | 100 active contacts a month, 3 active scenarios | €12.99 a month (Pro) | Per active contact |
Four tools are missing from that table on purpose. ManyChat, CreatorFlow, Chatfuel and ReplyKaro are not listed because their figures could not be read from their own pricing pages at the time of writing — ManyChat's site refuses automated requests, and the numbers circulating for the other three come from roundups rather than the vendors. A row with a wrong number is worse than no row, so they are omitted rather than guessed. Every figure above is from the vendor's own pricing page, checked on 6 September 2026, and each source is linked from the full comparison.
What a free tier limit means in practice
Volume caps sound generous until you attach them to a real post.
A Reel that does moderately well and produces four hundred keyword comments uses four hundred DMs. On a 500-a-month free tier, that is one good post and you are done for the month. On a 1,000 cap it is two. The cap is not sized for a bad month — it is sized to be adequate until you succeed, which is the point at which upgrading is least convenient and most likely.
This is not a criticism of the model, it is how freemium works. But it is worth doing the arithmetic against your own comment volume rather than the headline number, because the free tier that looks largest is often the one whose meter you will hit first.
Tadlo's free plan is metered differently: unlimited DMs and unlimited automations, with Tadlo's branding on outgoing messages and a limit on connected accounts. The upgrade trigger is presentation and scale rather than volume, so a post performing well does not force a decision.
The hidden costs
Four things that do not appear on pricing pages.
The Facebook Page requirement. Not money, but setup time and an ongoing dependency — a Page that gets restricted takes your Instagram automation down with it. We covered which tools require one.
Features behind the paywall. The follow gate in particular is frequently a paid feature. Check whether the thing you actually want is on the tier you are pricing.
Annual-only discounts. The advertised price is often the annual rate. Monthly is usually meaningfully higher.
Contact counts that do not reset. On some per-contact plans, someone who messaged you once in March still counts in September. Read how the meter resets before assuming a quiet month costs less.
How to actually choose
- Estimate your monthly keyword comments. Look at your best recent post and multiply. This one number decides everything.
- Check the billing model, not the price. If you expect growth, per-contact pricing is a variable cost that rises with success.
- Confirm the feature you want is on the tier you are pricing.
- Check the setup requirements. A Facebook Page dependency is a real cost even at zero.
- Test free before paying anything. Every tool here has a free tier. Run one automation on two tools for a week.
Where Tadlo sits
Rule yourself out first, so the rest is useful: if you need WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS or email alongside Instagram, buy a multi-channel platform — it is worth the higher price and Tadlo does not compete there. Same if you need live ecommerce order data.
If Instagram is where your volume actually is, the comparison is straightforward. Free ₹0, Creator ₹249 a month, Pro ₹399 a month. Flat, not per contact. Unlimited DMs on every plan including free, so nothing in the table above applies to you — there is no meter to hit and no tier to climb when a post performs.
The follow gate is on the free plan, which is unusual: it is commonly a paid feature across the category, and Tadlo is the only tool publishing production data on how often it actually catches a false claim. Paid tiers remove branding and add connected accounts rather than unlocking features, so the free plan is a working tier rather than a demonstration.
The full feature-by-feature version is on our comparison page, and the billing-model argument is unpacked in per-contact pricing explained.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Instagram DM automation cost?
Entry paid plans generally run from about $5 to $15 per month, with most tools also offering a metered free tier. The more consequential difference is the billing model: per-contact pricing increases with your reach, while flat pricing does not. Two tools at the same headline price can diverge sharply once your audience grows.
Is there a genuinely free Instagram DM automation tool?
Several tools offer permanent free tiers rather than trials, but almost all meter them by monthly message or contact volume, typically in the hundreds. Tadlo's free plan is metered by branding and connected accounts instead of volume, so message count does not force an upgrade.
What does per-contact pricing mean?
You are billed according to how many unique people you have messaged within a billing period, rather than a fixed monthly amount. Your cost rises as your reach rises, so the month a post performs well is also the month your bill increases. Some plans also count contacts from previous months until a reset.
Do free plans include the follow gate?
Often not — it is a common paid-tier feature across the category, so check the specific tier rather than the tool. Tadlo includes the follow gate on its free plan.
What is the cheapest Instagram DM automation tool?
The cheapest headline price is not usually the cheapest outcome, because it depends on your volume and the billing model attached to it. Work out your expected monthly keyword comments first, then compare what each tool charges at that volume — a flat plan at a higher headline price frequently costs less than a per-contact plan at a lower one.
Are there hidden costs in Instagram automation tools?
The common ones are advertised prices that turn out to be annual rates, features such as the follow gate sitting on a higher tier than expected, contact counters that do not reset monthly, and Facebook Page requirements that cost setup time and create an ongoing dependency rather than a fee.
