Why most tools can't do it
- No follow event. Instagram's API tells apps about comments, messages and story replies, but not about new follows. Automation platforms including Zapier and Chatfuel document the same limit.
- Message only after contact. Under Meta's messaging rules, a business can only message someone after that person interacts first, by commenting, replying to a story or sending a message.
- A limited beta. Meta is testing a follow-to-DM feature. Third-party reports say eligibility is decided by Meta account by account, and smaller accounts are generally not admitted yet.
Be careful with any tool that promises to DM every new follower. If it isn't using Meta's beta, it's likely working outside the official API, which puts your account at risk.
What works on every account
Flip it with a follow gate
Instead of messaging followers, turn commenters into followers. A follow gate sends your link only after the person follows you.
Story replies
New followers watch your stories first. Ask them to reply with a word and automate the welcome message.
DM icebreakers
Instagram's own icebreaker buttons, like "I'm new here", appear when someone opens a chat with you. Their tap starts the conversation.
Questions people ask
Can I send an automatic DM when someone follows me on Instagram?
Not reliably. Instagram's public API doesn't notify apps of new follows, and Meta's follow-to-DM feature is a limited beta that admits accounts case by case.
What's the best alternative to auto-DMing new followers?
Turn the problem around: use a follow gate so commenters must follow you to get your link. You can also automate replies to story replies and use Instagram's DM icebreakers.
Are tools that DM all new followers safe?
Be cautious. Unless a tool is using Meta's official beta, messaging people who haven't contacted you is outside the official API and can put your account at risk.
